Early detection of eye conditions
Comprehensive retinal health monitoring
Advanced retinal imaging and eye health insights
At O'Toid Opticians in Frome, we carry out OCT scans to create detailed images of the retina and optic nerve, supporting thorough eye health assessments. An OCT scan creates a 3-D cross-section of your retina. It uses light waves to reveal microscopic changes invisible in normal retina photos. Therefore, it detects eye diseases much earlier.

OCT can reveal early signs of:
-
Glaucoma
-
Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD)
-
Diabetic Eye Disease
-
Macular Holes
-
Retina Swelling Or Fluid
-
General health conditions that present in the retina like High Blood Pressure, Cardiovascular Diseases and Autoimmune Conditions

We are the first opticians to introduce the OCT Scans to eye examinations procedures in Frome - 2016.

Optomap scans show clues about overall health. This is because the vessels of the retina are among the smallest in the body. Typically, 5 - 10 micrometres in diameter

The optomap gives a far more complete view of small vessel changes in the retina. Helping to catch problems long before symptoms appear. It is especially valuable if you have diabetes, high blood pressure or family history of eye disease.
Note: An optomap scan is different from a traditional photo capture. The optomap scan captures 200 degrees of the retina in a single image, while the traditional photo captures only 15 percent.

We remain the only practice to provide an optomap scan as part of a routine eye examination in Frome since 2016.

Monitoring eye conditions and detecting early changes
At O'Toid Opticians, we analyse scan results to detect early signs of eye disease, including glaucoma, macular degeneration, and diabetic eye disease. We also carry out eye tests to support ongoing assessment of vision and eye health. We monitor changes in the retina and optic nerve over time, allowing us to track progression with accuracy. We record scan results as part of medical history, ensuring consistent and informed care while supporting long-term management of eye health through regular assessments.

Clear explanations and ongoing clinical support
We discuss scan results clearly, ensuring findings are easy to understand and relevant to individual eye health. We explain any identified concerns and outline suitable next steps where needed. We also provide eyewear to support vision following assessment results. We refer patients for further medical investigation when appropriate, supporting continued care beyond initial assessment. We combine detailed imaging with clear communication to maintain a structured and supportive approach to eye care.
